Xtreme Karting member Jamie Morrison experienced the opportunity of a lifetime, putting his racing skills to the test by competing in the final of the Red Bull Track attack in Cardiff on Monday 1
st of May 2006.
 |
Jamie, from Falkirk, had entered the Red Bull Track Attack competition at Xtreme Karting in Larbert. Throughout February and March over 20,000 karting enthusiasts across the UK entered the competition with the prize of being able to race in a specially constructed street race in Cardiff against F1 driver Vitantonio Luizzi (Team Scuderio Toro Rosso).

Jamie had set one of the fastest times at Xtreme Karting, allowing Jamie and 5 others to race in the qualifying round in Sunderland. Despite atrocious weather conditions Jamie qualified for the final in Cardiff held on Monday 1/5/06. Out of the initial 20,000 entrants Jamie had made it into the top 12 amateur racing drivers across the UK!
The street race in Cardiff was a spectacular affair, hosted by David Coulthard and a host of celebrities in attendance providing an action packed celebrity race and also the Track Attack Final. The specially constructed street circuit and race karts capable of 70mph provided an amazing race experience and incredible race action.
In the celebrity race the racing was fraught with danger, with Mylene Klass being rushed to hospital with a suspected broken leg after crashing out in the first race! In the final of the celebrity race Christian Klein (F1 driver from Red Bull Racing) won the celebrity race, with Vicki Butler-Henderson in a very close second place!
In the Track Attack final the racing was action packed, with both Vitantonio Luizzi and Robert Doornbos (F1 test driver) crashing out in spectacular fashion! Despite suffering some damage to his kart (some of it self induced!) Jamie managed to finish in a well deserved 9th place (our of the 15 competing drivers). This was a fantastic finishing position, and all the more remarkable given all the other 11 drivers who qualified had previously raced competitively at the very highest level!
Barrie Henderson, Managing Director of Xtreme Karting travelled down to Cardiff to support Jamie, said “For Jamie to qualify for the final was a tremendous feat in itself, with over 20,000 entrants to make it through to the top 12 driver shows a lot of skill and determination. With the karts achieving speeds of 70 mph through the streets of Cardiff in a true F1 style event the race action was amazing to watch and Jamie did very well to finish in ninth place!”
“Jamie has had an amazing time, mingling with celebrities, racing against F1 drivers and even getting asked for his autograph by some fans! “
Needless to say we all celebrated at the Red Bull party after the race!
The Red Bull Track Attack Final will be shown on ITV1 in June.
